General notes | DLG2: 131: "Mot latin cucullus qu´on suppose emprunté du gaulois". Meid 266 compares either OIr. coí, cúach 'cuckoo' or OIr. fid-chúach 'falcon' or with OIr. cúach 'bowl', but states that both is not convincing. Instead, he suggests an etymological connection to Goth. hauhs 'high' < PIE *kouko- (IEW 589) or *k^ouko- 'shining' (IEW 594f., 597). |
