General notes | Meid 125 reconstructs the Celtic name Malsus as *ml̥so-; Mulsus (RIU 1248) however, is not Celtic, but Latin (mulsus 'honey-sweet'); perhaps Malsus and Mulsus are "verschiedensprachliche Ausprägungen des gleichen Etymons" (Meid 125). Otherwise, a connection to *mallo- (OIr., W mall) < *ml̥no- 'lazy, slow' (cf. Gr. μέλλω, Lat. prō-mellere) is possible as well; EDPC 264, however, claims a PCelt. assimilation of *-ls- > *-ll- s.v. *mello- 'destruction, confusion' < PIE *melso-; if one accepts this assimilation, Malso can hardly be the Celtic continuant of PIE *ml̥so-. |
Other attestations | Malso DAG 114 (b), l. 2 (La Graufesenque graffito), Malsus (PAN 1)† NOR 1 (CIL III 13555). |
